Beijing, the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics, has seen an unexpected early snowfall. The Chinese capital’s first snow arrived on November 6, 2021, 23 days earlier than average, according to the Beijing Meteorological Bureau. Beijing’s temperature also hit a 10-year record low because of a cold wave, triggered by the La Niña climate phenomenon, which was felt in the capital and other parts of the country, including Tianjin, Hebei, and Inner Mongolia. The cold and early snow across much of northern China threatens to deepen the nation’s energy crisis that has already led to power cuts and surging energy prices.
